The picture is about an octopus in the deep sea and a fisherman on the surface. In French, octopus is masculine. In English, in addition to the name “Octopus” from Latin, another name, “Devilfish”, also gives an obvious indication of people’s attitude towards it. Its multiple tentacles and shellfish-eating nature remind Freudians of genital worship. In similar paintings and literature, octopuses are ferocious, and their attitude toward women more violent than loving, which may reflect Europeans, the industrial center of the world at the time, had a bit of a fear towards nature and themselves. These mysterious mollusks are dangerous and lecherous, like giants of the sea, guarding the greed of the world without leaving their homes.
